Health Facts: Summer 2021

I once read a saying that if we are what we eat, then I'm fast and cheap. Cheap food is about the most expensive thing you can put into your body because most times you will end up paying for it at the hospital or for supplements. There is a lot of misconception about health food. A lot of people think about apples, rice, greens, etc or organic when they think about health. However not all apples are created equal. An apple grown in an organic orchard that uses holistic management for disease and insect control and compost for fertilizer will have a completely different effect on your body than one grown in a conventional orchard and the same is true for vegetables grains meat and all other foods.

However, Organic is not always the answer either. Although supposedly it doesn't have all the bad things in it, a lot of it doesn't have the good either. A lot of organic soils are very depleted and that makes the product that come from them depleted as well. Then your body will be depleted and you will need supplements to make it up. Your body can only take a certain amount of stress and that varies a lot from person to person until it starts to shut certain parts down and it sends you signals and we have a name for these signals like Lyme’s or cancer, to name a few. Then we go to the doctor and treat the symptoms without fixing the problem. Now I will admit there are a lot of other factors that come into play here as well, and bad food is not the only reason we get sick, but it is the single biggest reason for most of our health problems and very easy to fix but most people are very confused. My intent here is not to bash organic or conventional farming. Both ways can work. My intent is to make you aware that if you don't know the farmer who grew your food and source it from a source that comes from healthy soils, you have no idea what you’re putting into your body. It doesn't have to come from us or need to be organic, just find out what practices your farmer is using and if you don't like what he's doing, ask him if he could change or find another source and don't buy anything you don't know where or how it was grown.

If you want more info or a buying guide that helps you source your food, we recommend you to join the Weston A Price Foundation - (202) 363-4394. If you want info on growing it yourself, contact us and we can send you several books about organic no-till gardening or raising chickens or whatever. Acres USA, a monthly magazine is also a very good source of info (800) 355-5313. We will also be sending a producer newsletter that will have info about soil health. If you’re interested in receiving it as well as this one feel free to contact us and we will gladly put you on our mailing list.

Editor’s Note:

Omega 3 vs. Omega 6

Your body doesn’t have the enzymes to produce these essential fatty acids, so you must get them from your diet.

But omega-6s and omega -3s don’t have the same effects. Scientists believe omega-6s are pro-inflammatory, while omega-3s are anti-inflammatory.

In fact, chronic inflammation may be one of the leading drivers of the most serious modern diseases, including heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and many types of cancer. S

cientists have hypothesized that a diet high in omega-6s but low in omega-3s increases inflammation, while a diet that includes balanced amounts of each reduces inflammation.

Those who follow a Western diet are typically eating way too much omega-6s relative to omega-3s. Many believe this is a serious health problem.

The good news is that grass-fed beef has a healthier balance of omega-6 & 3 than grain-fed beef!
